Homework 2 tasks from booklet

Task 4:

Shakespear presents Macbeth a brace warrior with unbelievable talent. He is said to have won many wars for his people and killed many opposing armies. The Sargent says ‘For brave Macbeth, he deserves that name.’ This suggests he is praised highly and loved by many.

Task 1:

The first mention of Macbeth is when the Sargent says this ‘but all’s too weak: For brave Macbeth–well he deserves that name– Disdaining fortune, with his brandish’d steel, Which smoked with bloody execution, Like valour’s minion carved out his passage Till he faced the slave.’ This shows that he is well praised and a value to their army.

Autobiography

Hi. My name Harley Hurd, I was born on the 29 may 2004 and through deep regret I will be presenting my life story to you.

It all started on that one fateful night, but to be honest I cant remember many memories up until i was 5 so I’m only going to briefly go over that. I was born in a house in the city of London, this probably explains my love for the city culture and the idea that I could not survive living in the country side. I was born at home, my mom says it was comforting not being surrounded by other patients. My family moved houses a lot until I was about five, I never knew the reason and I don’t find the need to ask.

I absoluty love the city, the culture and crowded streets in between  tall buildings and loud music. I find the architecture fascinating and I will say it again, I could never leave the centre of the country! Due to the house moving I had to go to different schools, however to great relief I found a permanent school when I was 5. At St Mary’s COE primary school I bonded with friends and had a lot of fun time with my group of friends. I always prided myself in my intelligence at primary and I was very competitive. Like a lot of people, reception was my favourite class as the work we was given was very scarce. I was in inducted into the school a little late so I was given a ‘welcome buddie’ from the class to look after me, later this pupil became one of my best friends.

Then the year after it was time to go into year 1. To be honest I thought I would be overwhelmed by the work, but it seemed to be quite fun. There was a boy in my class that was thrown of a chiar by our surprisingly aggressive infant teacher, a way to teach kids! That teacher was sacked. We then got a new teacher, Mr M. His name was Mark Malby so I think Mr M was suitable. I remember one day he gave us colouring papers and we had to colour ‘General Grevious’! He was ‘obviously’ remembered as a legend.

We skip a few years and we end up at Year 6. Despite the fact that I had to study for the dreaded SATs, this is  when I found my true passion… Video Games! Although year 6 meant SATs, it also meant Kingswood! This was the trip our class went on for a week, we spent the entire day travelling. We even stopped in the middle of nowhere just to eat lunch. We finally reached our location after 7 hours of coach and our class was given our own house! What happened was, there were 5 dorms and I stayed in one with 3 of my friends. We spent the next 3 hours, before going sleep, sorting out our suitcases and playing blackjack, I won most of the games, however I’m not sure if that’s a good thing for a 12 year old. We woke up the next day at 7 o’clock and we started the day with team exercises. There were 2 teams and we went head to head trying to see who could get their team on top of a wall fastest. We worked together getting one person on the wall and then followed up with the person on top pulling the next person on top and so on. Our next activity was abseiling and I will say, it was one of the best experiences of my life! We then zip wired and finished the day with quad-biking. We then spent the rest of the week doing other activities and it was amazing.

Then it was time… We had to all depart to go to our secondary schools. I was the only of my school to go to my school, London Nautical School. I found it is a journey and I think I’m finally finding the path. I’ve made a lot of knew friends and met a lot of new people. The school is in central London so this drives my ambition of staying in the city.

Well… The brings me here, on my computer writing this up. I’m going to continue to follow the path I’m on and see where it leads me. That’s enough from me then. Good bye… For now.

Review of book: Percy Jackson and the lightning thief.

The book i am going to write about is the first of the Percy Jackson book series. It is about a 12 year old boy who has had to move schools once a yeah because of some ‘unfortunate events’. Along with being a child with ADHD and dyslexia, he has a neglectful step father and his family does not have much money. He was told that his father died when he was young. As in many books this was a lie. He later finds out that he is a Half-blood, this means half god half human. He finds out his father is Posiedon and he goes on a quest to save the planet. He meets new friends on his journey and the book follows this.

Who were the main characters? Did you like or dislike them? Why?

The main characters are Percy, a sayter (goat from the waist down) called Grover and the daughter of Athena, Anabeth. I like the characters because they are well developed and contrast with each other well.

How did the characters respond to events and each other in each text?

The three characters react to each other well usually, apart from the occasional disagreements over the fate of different things.

What was similar or different in key aspects of the plot, setting and language of the text, compared to other texts?

The plot and story aspect of the book is very unique, however it is similar with Harry Potter, as it is a boy that is always picked on discovering that he is special.

Discrimination in Roll of Thunder

In this essay I will explain the subject of discrimination in the novel “Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry”. The novel was written by a woman called Mildred D. Taylor, she was born in Mississippi, where the book is set, but grew up in Ohio. She worked with university officials and students to secure a black studies course. Even though the novel was written in 1976, it is set in the times of the Great Depression of the USA, around the 1920’s. One example of discrimination is share cropping, this is when a land owner makes a person work free labour in exchange to stay on their land. In the following paragraphs I will write about 4 examples:

We first experience discrimination in the novel when we learn that Cassie and her siblings go to “Great Faith Elementary School”. Not long after we hear of the school we learn that it is a “black school”, from this we know that schools and other things are segregated in the Mississippi of the novel. Due to this segregation the richer white children feel superior toward the black folk. Furthermore, because of this feeling the white school (Jefferson Davis) bus religiously splashes the black children to and from school. We see this when Little Man says to Big Ma, “They splashed me again Big Ma!” This shows discrimination due to the fact that the white folk suffer no consequences to hurting the black folk, this shows that the black people had less rights than the white.

Another example of discrimination is when Lillian Jean Simms (a white child) commands Cassie to step off the side-walk. Cassie had just left a store owned by Mr Barnett after facing a confrontation with Mr Barnett himself. She had accidentally bumped into Lillian Jean and she didn’t take this lightly. Lillian Jean ordered Cassie to apologise and step off the side-walk into the road. Cassie refused to do either that was all until Big Ma returned from the lawyer. She forced Cassie to apologise. When Cassie did Lillian Jean told her to refer to her as “Miz”. This explains discrimination because it shows that white folk were more privileged than black folk, as it suggests that white people thought they needed to be respected in presence of black people.

Mr Morrison is a black workman on the rail roads and our next victim of discrimination. Mr Morrison was working on the rail roads when he was attacked by 2 white colleagues. He was attacked and fought back, due to this he was fired from his job. Cassie’s father had also  worked on the rail roads and found pity in Mr Morrison and invited him to stay at the Logan house. Even though Mr Morrison had been fired, this was not the only reason he was invited to the Logan house. There had been events of white men (the night men) killing black folks. Mr Morrison had gone to the house to protect the Logan family. These events both show discrimination in two ways. Firstly Mr Morrison being fired shows that white folk do face as severe consequences than black folk. Also the fact that the night men are famous for killing black folk and are not punished shows that white folk are not punished for thing that black folk are.

My final example of discrimination includes Cassie and her school for a second time. After Cassie had rejoined school after the holidays, they experienced a special assembly. In this assembly they had been told that for the first time ever they will get their own books. They were extremely excited but the excitement turned into anger when Cassie and Little Man saw what was on the front of the book. Before the pictures of white faces in the book, there was a chart recording the status of the book in previous years. The chart had stated: White-Pristine, White-Very good, White-Good, White-Bad and “Negro”-Terrible. When Little Man saw this he had immediately slammed the book on the floor and stated, “I DON’T WANT THIS!” He was punished and he didn’t get his own book. This event shows discrimination because it shows that black people were not as important as white folks in the 1930’s.

In this essay I have explained the theme of discrimination in the novel “Roll of thunder here my cry”. To conclude this essay I will state that discrimination in the book has the continuous theme of racism and that this is due to time of which the book is set

Mildred D. Taylor

Mildred Taylor was born on september 13 1943 to Wilbert Lee and Deletha Marie Taylor. She was born in a segregated city in a segregated state in segregated America. 3 weeks after her birth Mildred and her family moved to Ohio and she remained there until she graduated university in 1965. She loved writing as a child and took her inspiration from Charles Dickens and Jane Austen. She studied black culture, black history and black politics. She was approached by life magazine to write an article however due to her strange type of writing it was never published. In August 1972, she married Errol Zea-Daly. The two divorced in 1975 and have one daughter. She wrote and published her first book ‘Song of the trees in 1975’ and has been writing ever since.
